Oranga Tamariki boss confirms 'transformation': 9% of staff to go

Oranga Tamariki boss Chappie TeKani has confirmed a major restructure at his ministry, impacting 632 roles.

As Stuff reported earlier, that would be 447 full-time jobs were proposed to be disestablished.

"I want to be clear. The change I am proposing is not about tinkering around the edges. This change goes to our core as a ministry. It fundamentally moves us away from where we are, towards the kind of ministry we need to be," Te Kani said, in a statement.

He confirmed 632 roles were scheduled to be disestablished, although 185 new roles would be created. That meant 447 jobs were going.

He said that was about 9% of the entire Oranga Tamariki workforce, of 5100 people.

"For some, this proposal will be a hard read. For the 632 people who may be affected by this proposal and whose role may change, it will be hardest.

"The change also delivers on the savings targets set by the Government," he said.
