Irish ballot counters have gone to bed, will resume tomorrow

Despite being one of the first country's to vote, Ireland will likely be one of the last to announce final results.

This is thanks to the country's use of paper ballots, which are counted by hand, and a system of proportionate representation, which requires multiple recounts, to reallocate votes from elected or eliminated candidates.

Prior to closing for the night, officials announced an initial count for the four-seater Dublin constituency. Barry Andrews of Fianna Fail/Renew and Regina Doherty of Fine Gael/EPP are likely to each take a seat, while several candidates across the spectrum will fight for the final two seats. Contenders include Green member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ciaran Cuffe and Claire Daly of The Left.

Announcements of first counts will only be made tomorrow, for Ireland's other two constituencies.

However In Ireland South, MEPs Seán Kelly of Fine Gael and Billy Kelleher are polling strongly.

In the 'Midlands-North-West' constituency, MEPs Luke 'Ming' Flanagan (The Left) and Fine Gael's Maria Walsh are expected to retain their seats.
