Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on unemployment rise: ‘We are doing the best we can’
Christopher Luxon says his government is focused on reducing unemployment after new official data showed it has risen to 4.3%. This equates to 134,000 people, according to Stats NZ. Women were unemployed at a higher rate too.
“What I'm focused on is actually reducing unemployment, and that means actually getting to the root cause of the problem that we're encountering … what we've got to do is keep working really, really hard on the root cause of the problem, which is getting inflation back under 3%,” he said.
