New poll puts NZ First out of Parliament

Five months after the general election, the latest political poll on Monday night indicted New Zealand First would be out of Parliament and Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori could form a government.

The 1News Verian Poll found if an election were held today, there would be a drop in support for coalition partners National, ACT and NZ First.

The poll had National on 36%, down two points on the previous poll from February, ACT down a point to 7%, and New Zealand First down two points to 4% - below the 5% threshold needed to get into Parliament.

With New Zealand First out of Parliament, National's 48 seats and ACT's 9 would not be enough to form a government.

Labour, the Green Party and Te Pati Maori would have 64 - enough to put together a coalition.

Christopher Luxon's preferred prime minister result took a 2 percentage point dip, down to 23%, while Chris Hipkins rose slightly, by 1, to 16%.

Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick rose to 6%, and ACT leader David Seymour was on 5%. Winston Peters was down two points to 4%.

The poll was taken between April 20 and April 24, with a sample size of 1000 people surveyed online and by mobile phone. It was carried out with a ±3.1 percent-point margin of error at a 95% confidence level.

Party support was as follows:
  • National: 36% (down 2 percentage points)
  • Labour: 30% (up 2)
  • Green Party: 14% (up 2)
  • ACT: 7% (down 1)
  • NZ First: 4% (down 2)
  • Te Pāti Māori: 4% (steady)
