'We are going to get stuff built in this country,' Luxon says

On RNZ on Tuesday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was asked about the risks that the fast-track approvals legislation raises the risk of allegations of bias and cronyism.

Projects going through the fast-track process will be considered by an expert panel, which will make recommendations to ministers, who have the final decision on whether to decline or approve applications.

Luxon was asked if the Government would drop the provision that allowed ministers to have the final say.

"No. We're going to stop talking about building more roads, more housing, more renewables, and actually get on and do it. We want the fast track provisions, a one-stop shop, so that we can actually get things built in this country," he said.

"That is the problem in New Zealand, is that we have seen a huge slowdown in actually getting things done, and it's come at a huge cost.

"We'll give consideration to all of the concerns around the economics, the environment, the social concerns of any project. But we are going to get stuff built in this country. And we are not doing that at the moment. We have calcified and stultified the system to such a degree that we can't get things done."
