Luxon says smoke free generation law to be repealed due to 'unintended consequences'

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the law, which would have stopped people born after 2009 from ever legally buying cigarttes, had "uninteded consequnces".

He has denied criticism that this law was being repealed as a revenue gathering exercise for the Government. National's Chris Bishop also rejected allegations this law was being pulled back due to his past employment as a lobbyist for a tobacco producer.

Luxon said Bishop was not involved in any discussion about this policy during coalition negotiations.

He said it was a bad policy.

"It has unintended consequences that we don't think are going to help," Luxon said.
