Andrew Little retires from politics

Former Labour Government Minister Andrew Little has announced he will retire as an MP.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Little said it was time for Labour to rebuild and look for talent who could form the next Labour government.

"I am not the face of the face of the seventh Labour Government," he said.

Little was set to return to Parliament on Labour's list. His decision likely means Shanan Halbert, who had not made it back to Parliament based on Saturday night's result, should re-enter Parliament on Labour's list.

He said his retirement would allow a "face of the future" to join Labour in Opposition.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities my country and party have given me to serve the community,” Little said.

"By me stepping aside itll make room for one more. It also expresses my view that the party now needs to think not just about what opposition looks like, but what the next Government looks like."

As one of Labour's most experienced MPs, Little had served many roles as a minister and was the Labour Party leader from 2014 to 2017. He resigned as leader, for Jacinda Ardern to take over.
“There are no words to adequately thank my wife and son, and the many others who have given unwavering support throughout my time in politics," he said in a statement.

Little was a lawyer for workers' unions before entering Parliament. He said he planned to return to the law.
