Asked who supported taking GST off food, NZ First leader Winston Peters said he did not.
Moderator Jack Tame pointed out NZ First's promises for election 2023 says: "We will
take GST off basic foods including fresh food, vegetables, meat, dairy, and fish."
That is
promise #15 on its web page titled "New Zealand First 2023 Policies."
Peters said this was not NZ First policy. He said his party had only promised to consider removing GST from food.
The web page has since been replaced, and a policy on the new page states the party would "secure a Select Committee Inquiry into GST off basic fresh foods".
Labour has campaigned to take GST off fruit and vegetables.
Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi said Labour wasn't going far enough.
He said they'd talked a lot about "bread and butter issues", but pointed out they weren't going to take tax off bread or butter. Te Pāti Māori said it would take GST off all kai.
